Dungeons & Dragons + Neverwinter MMORPG Update

04/06/2026

Within a week of putting our minds to learning more about Dungeons and Dragons, it appears that my Twitch community has put together to pieces of getting our very first one-shot campaign started.  The first campaign will feature our Dungeon Master, FireDogForge, with his homebrew campaign to get our group of players introduced to the Dungeons and Dragons universe.  Through our discord community, we will have approximately 4 to 6 players ready to partake in this session which will occur on Thursdays at 8 p.m. EST.  We do not have a definitive start date for the session yet, but everyone has agreed that the time frame works for them.

Our Dungeon Master has decided to use the D&DBeyond website for the campaign as it includes many features for use in playing Dungeons and Dragons.  One of these features is the character creator which allows you to build your character sheet and then link it to a campaign page created by the Dungeon Master for the session we will be playing.  If you would like to see my Dragonborn Barbarian character that I will be playing, please click on the link here.  I chose a Dragonborn Barbarian to start because I wanted to have the type of character that goes in swinging.  They are known for being very powerful melee combatants, capable of both dealing big damage and taking big damage.  This means that my role will have to be at the front of the fights, soaking up damage for my fellow adventurers so they can be safe in the back lines doing damage.

To prepare for the first session, I will be watching videos on YouTube on how best to utilize the barbarian and its various skills, as well as watching general gameplay videos on how the game operates so that I am ready to assist my companions on their journey to the best of my ability.  As mentioned previously, I also am in possession of a player's handbook that will further allow me to read up on Dungeons and Dragons and ensure that I am playing correctly.  Since I will not be the only new player to Dungeons and Dragons in our group, I will also try to help people learn as well by sharing this information on my stream.

The last couple of days I also have started playing a PC MMORPG called Neverwinter.  This game is heavily inspired by Dungeons and Dragons, similar to Dungeons and Dragons online, and has helped solidify some terminology for me to use in the dungeons and dragons one shot session.  I chose a Dwarf Barbarian to play in Neverwinter rather than a Dragonborn, but they pretty much play the same in terms of mechanics.  The main mechanic in a Barbarian is their rage where they become extremely strong and offensive, capable of taking blows while expending blows upon their enemies.  Neverwinter to me is more modern than Dungeons and Dragons online, and i have been enjoying the combat aspect of the game immensely.

Progress is being made on multiple fronts and this newfound interest in Dungeons and Dragons is starting to get addicting to me.  As I learn more about the world of D&D, I look forward to playing more sessions, whether they be one shot or prolonged campaigns, and eventually get to a place where I can become the Dungeon Master as well.  I love storytelling and writing, so there may be a future there if I continue to cultivate my interest in this genre.  I also feel as a gamer who loves studying the MMORPG genre, getting a firm understanding of Dungeons and Dragons will also help me in that department as well, either through adding roleplay elements to my gameplay or simply seeing new ways for games to design immersive experiences.  In any event, I am excited for the future, and I hope you all enjoy the journey along with me.

Until next time,

Blackboa
